A joint team of Vitthalwadi police and Ulhasnagar Crime Branch surprised a murderer, who had fled to Howrah, by reaching there before him and detaining him at the station. The man had fled after killing his wife, a former bar girl. He had even confessed to the crime to a friend, who had informed the police.

The deceased, Jamila Khan alias Khatoon (24) was the second wife of the accused, Rajesh Khan (26); they had married a year ago. Rajesh was from West Bengal and used to stay with Jamila at Rajaram Complex in Asher Gaon, Ulhasnagar.
Rage kills
According to the police, the incident took place on Friday afternoon. After an argument between them, Khan, in a fit of rage, choked her.
“On Friday afternoon, Khan met Safiullah Shaikh (35), his friend and neighbour, and gave him the key to his third-floor flat. He said Jamila had left home and he was going to look for her. On Friday night, Shaikh received a call from Khan, asking him to throw away a resin bag as he had killed his wife and kept her in it. Khan informed us and we started an investigation,” said a senior officer from Vitthalwadi police station.
Faster than the criminal
A case was register at Vitthalwadi police station under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The police, on the basis of Khan’s mobile number, tracked his location.
“We sent a team to Howrah by flight. And as soon as he got down at Howrah railway station, we detained him on Sunday. The team is bringing him back to Mumbai,” said Surendra Shirsat, senior inspector, Vitthalwadi police station.
The team of six members that left for Howrah included two officers and four constables.
“The officers along with the accused boarded a local on Sunday night. During interrogation, he said that whenever he used to come to Mumbai, he would stay with Jamila,” said an officer.
He added, “There used to be regular fights between them, he told us. There were also fights over cash, as he used to take away her salary.”
