>>u00a0The lady, who is lovingly known as 'didi' was born to Promileswar and Gayatri Banerjee on January 5, 1955, in Kolkata. She had political inclinations right from her college days.

>>u00a0Mamata was the state's Mahila Congress' general secretary from 1976-80. She was an uninhibited person right from her youth. She had once jumped on the bonnet of Jaiprakash Narayan's car and danced in protest.

>>u00a0In 1984, she became one of India's youngest parliamentarians beating veteran Communist leader Somnath Chatterjee from Jadavpur Constituency.

>>u00a0In 1996, she caught the collar of ex- Samajwadi MP Amar Singh to protest hike in petroleum prices.

>>u00a0In February 1997, Mamata threw her black shawl on Union Railway minister Ram Vilas Paswan for ignoring West Bengal. She also put in her resignation. The speaker PA Sangma did not accept her resignation and asked her to apologise.u00a0
