Caught after owner recognises his two-wheeler stolen from parking lot

Au00a0scooter mechanic desperate to pay his house rent allegedly stole a brand new two-wheeler from Satavvadi in Hadapsar, but ran out of luck when the person he approached to sell the vehicle turned out to be its owner.

The police said when Naim Rahim Shaikh (27), a resident of Tupevasti in Urali Kanchan, on Sunday afternoon showed a Bajaj Platina motorcycle to Jeevan Sadhu Shedge and said he wanted to sell it, Shedge immediately recognised his bike.

Burning rubber
Shedge, who had lodged a police complaint at the Hadapsar police station on November 11 about his missing vehicle, began shouting for help.

The people who were around at the time responded to Shedge's appeal and ran to catch hold of Shaikh.
Though confused by this sudden turn of events, Shaikh realised he had to act fast and fled on the vehicle at breakneck speed.

Cop gets into chase
Shaikh escaped the angry mob, but a policeman on patrol duty got into the chase and finally caught Shaikh.
The police asked him to show the bike papers, and Shaikh fumbled at this. By then the vehicle owner reached the police station and explained everything.

"Shaikh somehow got hold of Shedge's phone number and learnt he was looking for a Bajaj Platina. As he thought it was an opportunity to wash his hands of the stolen vehicle and earn money, he contacted Shedge to fix up the deal," said Senior Police Inspector Pandharinath Mandhare. "Shedge asked him to bring the vehicle to him so that he could see it, and they met at a roadside restaurant. As soon as he saw it, Shedge knew it was his stolen vehicle."

PSI D B Shinde produced Shaikh in the Lashkar court, and he was remanded in magisterial custody till November 29.u00a0

Desperate for cash
Shaikh said he had lost his job just eight days ago, and was in dire need of money. He reportedly confessed to having stolen the vehicle.

"I am repenting it. I made a mistake, but I had recently lost my job and I did this because I was under so much pressure to pay the pending house rent," said Shaikh.
