Thiruvananthapuram: Tragedy struck the ongoing National Games as a 21-year-old netball player from Maharashtra died here today following cardiac arrest.

Mayurish Pawar collapsed after training due to a massive cardiac arrest and was declared dead by doctors at a nearby
private hospital today, according to National Games Secretariat officials here.

"He was on his way back to the room after a practice session at the indoor stadium at Vellayani near here along with his other team members. He suddenly collapsed and the others rushed him to the hospital. But, doctors declared him
dead," a NGS official said.

The dead body would be handed over to the team and family members after a post mortem, he added.

A Games official said that Pawar's team had played against Chandigarh in the morning.

"Chandigarh won the match and they left the venue. The incident occurred when the Maharashtra team arrived at the practice court close to noon, where he fell ill suddenly," said the official who did not wish to be identified.
