Rising heat, alleged official apathy kill two rare hog deer at Bannerghatta National Park

The soaring temperatures in the state claimed the lives of two hog deer at the Bannerghatta National Park (BNP). The deer were part of a batch of hog, barking and thamin deer that had recently been procured from the National Zoological Park in New Delhi. "The hog deer died due to sheer negligence on the part of BNP officials who did not take appropriate steps to protect the deer from the temperature which shot to 36 degrees," said a source in the BNP.

"One of the two Hog deer had symptoms of pneumonia. The other couldn't cope up as it had conceived," said Dr BC Chittiyappa, assistant director (veterinary), BNP.

The Other Side
"We had got new deer species from New Delhi," said Vijaykumar, a range forest official at the Bannerghatta National Park. "Two of the deer died. This is unfortunate. There was no lapse on our part. It was due to the stress suffered during shifting that caused their death. We are taking adequate measures to ensure the ones that survive are safe."
