Some of the prominent personalities who attended the event were Vice President Hamid Ansari, Union Minister for Law and IT Kapil Sibal, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Governor K Sankarnarayanan. It was Ansari who inaugurated the event.
The event was a first-of-its-kind to be organised at the varsity campus. MAVM General Secretary Yusuf Ansari said, “The event focussed on education for minorities. Illiteracy is the main reason for lack of development among minorities. Following the speeches, students got an opportunity to interact with them and ask them a few questions. Several debates pertaining education for minorities and their development took place, wherein students participated in large numbers.”
Students from across the state who participated in the event were also made aware about the various educational schemes initiated by the government for those belonging to minority communities. Also discussed was imparting education to child labourers, which would provide them with better job opportunities in the future. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said, “More money will be allocated for education for minorities and their development. Education creates awareness and people can explore different fields.”
Some of the other topics discussed were ideas like having schools that work in two shifts day and night so that every child gets an opportunity. Addressing the students in his speech, Rajya Sabha MP Hussain Dalwai said, “Get education and do something great in life, and make India proud. Every child has the right to education. Every religion has right to education.” Yasim Khan, a second year student, said, “The programme helped students like me. I came to know about several schemes for minorities about which I was clueless until today.”u00a0
