The hosts were 211 for 6 yesterday when Vettori joined McCullum and at the time of going to press earlier today, they had taken NZ to 349 after 106 overs.
Skipper Vettori was batting on 70 while McCullum, playing an uncharacteristically patient innings, was unbeaten on 64.
