Murthy had reportedly tried to counsel Suguna (33), his wife of 15 years, to stop meeting the man who ultimately murdered him.

"Murthy pleaded with Suguna to stop seeing her paramour whose name is also Venkatesh.

Accused Venkatesh was having an affair with Suguna. He and an accomplice Murali killed her husband Murthy

He took her mobile phone and even shifted house from KP Agahara to Bommanahalli. He pleaded with her to think of their three minor children. However, nothing worked," said Harish.

Venkatesh had allegedly begun visiting Suguna on the pretext of playing with her children and gradually became intimate with her.

When Murthy took away Suguna's mobile phone from her, she took to calling her paramour from a public phone when her husband was away.

Murthy was enraged with Suguna's refusal to end the affair and threatened her with 'serious action'.

Venkatesh and his friend Murali abducted Murthy as he left his office on July 12 and took him to an isolated spot in Gnanabharati. Despite being stabbed repeatedly, Murthy made a determined effort to flee the spot.

Venkatesh allegedly smashed his head with a boulder, after which the men buried the body in a drain and covered it with stone slabs.

After murdering Murthy, Venkatesh spent the night at Suguna's house.

Suguna called Murthy's brother Govindaraj the day after the murder to inform him that her husband had not come home last night.

A worried Govindaraj searched for his brother with no success. He advised Suguna to lodge a complaint with the police.

Sub-Inspector Harish said he suspected something was amiss when he spoke to Suguna. "I suspected her integrity.

When I casually chatted with the children, they told me that auto-uncle had come home the night their father went missing," said Harish.

"When I confronted Suguna, she initially feigned ignorance but later stammered Venkatesh's name."

Venkatesh, Suguna and Murali have been arrested for murder and remanded in judicial custody. The couple's children are in their uncle's care.
