Monika's kin were on friendly terms with the murdered couple

Monika's brothers Ankit and Manjit visited their 23-year-old sister on Sunday to invite her for the wedding anniversary of their parents. Little did she know that they would kill her to avenge the alleged insult they were subjected to when Monika married a boy of another caste against the family's wish.

The Delhi Police is suspecting that Ankit and Manjit have killed both Monika and her husband Kuldeep, 26. The duo is on the run and the cops have already rounded up seven members of Monika's family for interrogation.

Investigations into the double murder of Monika and Kuldeep in the Ashok Vihar area of northwest Delhi on Sunday night have also revealed that the deceased girl's family initially tried to threaten the couple but then later became friendly with them.

"Kuldeep belonged to the Balyan community while Monika was Gujjar by caste. Their families were opposed to their marriage. Due to the threats by Monika's family, the court had given them police protection after they got married in 2006," said Amit Balyan, Kuldeep's brother.

"However, some time later while they were living in Janakpuri, Monika's family started getting friendly with them giving the impressions that they have exorcised the ghosts of the past and were ready to accept Kuldeep as a member of their family," he claimed.

Amit alleged that after the couple was relaxed that nothing bad would come upon them, Monika's brother struck in one night and killed both of them. "They shot Kuldeep in his car while Monika at her Ashok Vihar flat. They came to the house on the pretext of inviting Monika for a function to mark the wedding anniversary of their parents," Amit claimed.

"We first came to know about the a lady admitted to the Sunderlal hospital in Ashok Vihar and when our team reached there they found her dead. She was shot in the head. Her mother and father took her to the hospital.

Then our team got information about another dead body in a car just behind Monika's house. The dead body was later identified as Kuldeep's. We have formed three teams to probe into the case and we will work it out soon," said NS Bundela, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West Delhi).

Kuldeep's father also confirmed that Monika's family was planning to organize a party to celebrate the wedding anniversary of her parents.
"Monika and Kuldeep were happy that Monika's family are coming to friendly terms with them but they failed to see through their real intentions," said Mukesh Balyan, Kuldeep's father.
