Late Reeva Steenkamp-s mum June and father Barry yesterday expressed relief at the five-year jail sentence awarded to their daughter-s killer paralympian Oscar Pistorius by the Pretoria High Court. Reeva 29 was shot dead by Pistorius in his bathroom on Valentine-s Day 2013 in the early hours of the morning.

Pistorius claimed he shot through the closed bathroom door suspecting her to be an intruder. Last month, Pretoria High Court judge Thokozile Masipa ruled that Pistorius had not intention of killing Steenkamp, but acted negligently nevertheless.

In an exclusive interview with HELLO magazine, June said the family is happy and satisfied with the punishment handed out to Pistorius.

-Best sentence-
"It was the best sentence we could have expected. We-re not looking for vengeance or for him to get hurt. We-re just happy because he-s going to be punished for what he-s done.

He may come out early on good behaviour, but by the time he-s served that time, it will have taught him that he can-t go around doing things like that," said June 67, who attended every day of the trial that concluded yesterday.

June said she felt that Pistorius knew what was coming, in terms of the jail sentence. "I believe Oscar expected to go to prison. He was almost resigned to what was coming. It was obvious in the court from his manner.

He was calm." June-s husband Barry said the family felt a sense of relief. "We are both satisfied with the result and are relieved it-s all over. All we want to do now is get on with our lives," said the 71-year-old.

Meanwhile, as Pistorius climbed into the armoured police vehicle yesterday following his sentencing, onlookers whistled and jeered at the athlete. Later, as the police vehicle drove through the crowd, people were seen chasing and rushing around it trying to catch a glimpse of the fallen hero.
