What's under your hat?

Mandar Patil has been a magician since he was five. Invite him to your kitty party, and he'll dig into his bowler hat to pull out a bunny, among other things

For Mandar Patil and his wife Manada, every day is magical. They make their living off a quaint magic store located at Mahim, and put up shows at personal parties where they make your cutlery levitate. Be sure to keep your fine China far from his reach.

"My father taught me my first trick when I was five," says Patil, while tearing up a Rs 100 note that he yanks out of my wallet, handing it back to me in a second, without a crease. "It's an art that keeps you learning. I keep developing new acts each day."

While pursuing a commerce graduation, Patil realised he was spending more time entertaining his friends than he was inside the classroom. That's when he decided to turn into a professional entertainer. So, if you want to add some hocus pocus to your party, Patil is available for Rs 2,000 a session. Twenty minutes will buy you 20 tricks custom designed for your audience.

"Children like it when I play with colours, so, I make things vanish and make live rats come alive from thin air. I also do corporate shows. The grown-up audience is more challenging. I involve them in the act. I once made a gentleman's spectacles levitate, and watched his expression turn into the same as I see on a six year-old," laughs Patil.

The Magic Shop stocks a wide range of props that would come handy for Patil's community. Two-sided coins, bottles that never empty and cards that do half the trick for you are all sourced locally or designed by the couple themselves. And the magician himself, usually dressed in a red polka dotted shirt, is ever ready to pull a coin out of your ear.

Know your magician
Conjuring magician: Conjuring requires that you be at least six feet away from the audience. It's what you see at birthday parties before small groups.
Mobile magician: Also called table hopping-magic, here the magic gets personal and the magician will make you part of the show by either asking you to pick a card or making our watch or spectacles levitate.
Illusionist: This refers to the large-scale magician. It requires a professional stage, large props and most often, a 'lovely' assistant.
