Chiranjeevi's dreams of winning from his native town were dashedu00a0 because he had insultedu00a0 citizens who had sought his father's house for a library.

The star sold the house in Palacole two years ago and got Rs 2 lakh for it. He earns at least Rs 3.5 crore for a film.

The actor's father K Venkata Rao, a police constable, had built the house decades ago.

People of the town had requested Chiranjeevi to give it for a public library, but he refused point blank.

When they realised Chiranjeevi wouldn't budge, they collected Rs 75,000 through donations.

Chiru's town has no library

Chiranjeevi did not come down on his price, and sold the house to someone else.

"He paid the price for his meanness now," a voter told MiD DAY over the phone.

Congress gains

Palicole voters have chosen B Usha Devi, a Congress nominee, over him.

"He might have forgotten about the library," said Narasa Rao, president, Palacole Nagaraika Samithi. "But people remember. How can such a money-minded man be our leader?" The town still has no library yet.

"The house is ideally located for a library," Rao told MiD DAY. "We haven't found any such building till now."

Chiranjeevi's father passed away last December, and the star had planned to instal his statue at the house.

Tirupati win

The star, who launched Praja Rajyam Party, is set to take oath as a legislator in a couple of days as he has won from Tirupati. He had contested from Palacole and Tirupati simultaneously.

While he defeated the Congress candidate in Tirupati, he fell short of 5,000 votes in Palacole.

The Nagarika Samithi in Palacole was jubilant, but Chiranjeevi's camp attributed his defeat to caste politics.

"Chiranjeevi is Kapu, while Balijas, Devangas, and Viasyas came together to vote against him," said a confidant of the star. "Usha Devi could win only because she was a Vaisya."

Tinsel town
Palacole, a town on the west bank of river Godavari, has produced many film-makers. It is the home town of Dasari Narayana Rao, who holds a Guinness record for directing 150 films and producing 53. Allu Aravind, film producer and son of the legendary comedian Allu Settharamiah, hails from the same town. Chiranjeevi is married to Aravind's sister.
