And other people feel compelled to change their birth name for no reason beyond personal taste.
Take Ranea Crabtree, born Sheila, a mother of two teenagers from Ohio.

Crabtree loathes her given name so much she will plead her case for a name change to a Licking County judge on February 11.
If Crabtree is successful, her new name will be Sexy Crabtree.
Her explanation: “I wear Victoria’s Secret clothes all the time,” said Crabtree. “I was like, ‘Shoot, I’ll just go for Sexy’.”
She added, “I really wa nt to do Sexy because it’s kinda’ like my personality. I just love to be adventurous, have fun and do all kinds of things.”
When asked why the name change, she said, “It’s just one of those names that I can’t stand. I hate the fact that I have been cursed with it. My mom gave me my middle name of Ranea and my dad gave me my ugly name.”
Other than dealing with what seem to be unresolved family issues, Crabtree has taken all the steps needed for the name change, including filling out a form, paying the $87 court fee and a 30-day notice in a local paper.
The final step comes on February 11 when she will stand in front of a Licking County judge to formerly ask to change her name to ‘Sexy’ once and for all.
Legal experts say the odds are Crabtree’s name change will be approved, but she’s planning an alternative strategy, just in case.
“If it’s not Sexy, then I might go for Sparkle,” she added.
