A 26-year-old girl was arrested on charges of stealing a Nokia N8 mobile phone worth Rs 30,000 from the Vimla Niketan Girls hostel yesterday. The complaint was filed at Deccan police station by one of the hostel inmates Pradnya Sahu (24), who works for a reputed IT company in Hadapsar.

The suspect, identified as Surekha alias Soniya Fina (26) hailing from Delhi, has been charged under
Section 380 of the Indian Penal Code.
According to the investigating officer Mahesh Nimbalkar, Soniya broke into Pradnya's room on January 6 when she was away, and stole her mobileu00a0-- a Nokia N8 model. Initially, many girls staying in the hostel were under suspicion. "We had kept the mobile handset under surveillance using its IMEI number which was recently traced to Soniya. After the location was traced, we took Soniya into custody who confessed to have stolen the mobile phone," Nimbalkar said.
"The girls hostel experiences many minor thefts of mobile, goggles and cash amounts but not much
are reported to the police station. Pradnya had also initially reported a 'missing' case of the mobile which was then lodged as a theft case," he added.
Soniya is married but stays away from her husband. She used to work in a garment shop at Dhole Patil Road.
"She claims to have stolen the mobile phone because she was in need of money," said Nimbalkar.
