President of the Wrestling Federation of India,u00a0GS Mander yesterday questioned the logic behind including sporting disciplines such as netball and lawn Bowls in the Commonwealth Games.
"It is time that the Commonwealth Games Federation consider revising such things," Mander said.
"I agree these sports are among the seven sporting disciplines which are mandatory. But how many countries actually participate in such disciplines? It is an irony that a majority of the countries in the world play football but is not part of the Commonwealth Games. It doesn't matter if India wins a medal or no, but it should be in the Commonwealth Games by popular demand," Mander added.
Mander, meanwhile, also confirmed that as of now, the Greco-Roman category will not be a part of the next edition of the Commonwealth Games, but freestyle wrestling will be included. "We have spoken to the organisers and they have promised us that they will try and consider accommodating the Greco-Roman style,"
he said.
