Your guide to being a popular video star

Here's what you need to keep in mind if you want to be a successful indie musician and still make your way to a mass TV show

Recording quality songs: One of the biggest tools you need to arm yourself with is a great quality demo of your music. Whether it is to pass it around to venues, booking agencies or labels, good quality singles will have an edge over the others. Nobody has the patience to hear a shoddy, home studio recording. To get noticed, package it well.

Get online: One of the things producers and casting directors do while looking for great music, is browse online. Know your web as a musician. Get on websites like Soundcloud, Reverbnation and YouTube to upload your music and concert videos. Run a subscription YouTube channel and track your number of hits. Invest in a Facebook page and make sure you update it often. The only way to garner fans is by spreading the word.

Figure out your USP:
All the talent that's pushed on prime time usually has something unique about it. They aren't run-of-the mill artistes you see at random pub rock nights. They know their sound, they know their identity and have cashed in on that. If you do Folk, dress for the occasion. If you are a headbanger, wear your attitude. Reflect your USP in your wardrobe and music. Sign up for music workshops: Perhaps the greatest gift the small music industry in India can give is that of networking. A small but motivated bunch of people organise workshops and meetings on and off to spread the word on the the latest technology, festival booking dates, right venues and indie labels worth investing in. Take the lead and build the brand of your sound.

Get a booking agency: The best thing a booking agency can do is put your music out there by bringing the stage to you. Nothing goes down better than a live gig. And if you are looking for an opportunity to play, then play on. Booking agencies will shop your music and band profile across venues, festivals and sponsors to get you the right gig where your music can be heard. Frequency counts and helps build fanbase.

Participate in festivals and competitions: India's campus rock festivals are probably the best places to get heard. Participate in as many as you can. Every year, at least 10 such fests are organised across the country. It'll take you places.
