People run for their lives after cop's gun goes off
Rumours continued to spread, the city was on tenterhooks on Day 2 after the terror strikes in south Mumbai. Chaos prevailed at Metro cinema and CST last afternoon as the public ran helter-skelter following rumours of firings sending the security forces in a tizzy.
At 1.30 pm, a cop's weapon misfired at Metro and the resultant panic forced shopkeepers to down shutters and residents stayed indoors too.
The police swung into action immediately as the incident took place near the police commissionerate.
"We only heard the gunshot and later realised that it was a misfire. However, we took all the precautionary measures," said a police official. Fear gripped commuters at CST, when policemen shooed away a few miscreants who ran into the subway. Seeing them run, shopkeepers shut shop and commuters began screaming that there was a firing.
Panic-struck commutes fled from the station and toppled a door-frame metal detector and added to the commotion.
Train services were stopped and commuters were asked to evacuate the station premises. Realising that these were nothing but rumours, the GRP and RPF tried to clam commuters and restore order.
