'Marathi is not confined to Maharashtrians alone'

By: Vivek Sabnis

The world today is governed by technology so why not literature? A group of 18 young techies has made this possible. These IT professionals from the Bay Area in USA are organising the first Vishwa Sahitya Sammelan at San Jose from February 14 to 18, 2009.

"Our efforts are to make this first world Marathi literary meet more techno-savvy. We will take up contemporary issues dealing with Marathi language", said Sagar Yevlekar one of the IT professionals." He further added, "Such a literary meet on an international platform is one of a kind."

On behalf of Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Mahamandal and Maharashtra Mandal Bay area, noted Dalit writer Gangadhar Pantawane has been selected to preside over the literary meet.

Talking to MiD DAY Yevlekar said, "Marathi is one of the top 20 languages in the world and this language is not  confined to Maharashtrians alone. "We are asking participation even from the Americans, who are studying Marathi in some of the universities", he said.

"A live web cast with the updated information is one of our goals," Yevlekar added.

The mandal is inviting 1,000 Indians to attend the literary meet. As this is a Herculean task, we have involved some management experts to plan it accordingly. "Making arrangements for a total of 3,000 people needs meticulous planning and we are giving it at our best shot," he informed.

According to Yevlekar, "India is going global, so why not Marathi and Maharashtra? Our mission is not confined to India alone. Let Marathi literature that has a long tradition of over 1,000 years grow in a global perspective," he concluded.
