Yet another blow to Goa tourism

Brutal: John Kelly was beaten to death at a bar on Calangute beach on Wednesday. British teenager Scarlett Keeling (inset) was  raped and murdered on Anjuna beach in February

The death of Australian tourist John Kelly (65) at a beachside bar in north Goa, is yet another blow to the influx of foreigners to Goa.

While the notorious death of British teenager Scarlett Keeling slowed the flow of foreign tourists to Goa last season, the Australian national's death  has the potential to do the same this season, which ranges between October and March.

"It is a sad thing to happen, especially at the beginning of the new tourism season. But it is an isolated case and details are awaited," said Goa Tourism Development Corporation vice chairman Lyndon Monteiro.

Tourism in Goa had already threatened to take a downward dip after the Australian and Canadian governments put  travel advisories asking citizens to avoid travelling to India. "We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in India because of the high risk of terrorist activity by militant groups," said the Australian advisory.
