NCP to hold medical camps to shame BMC

By: Sanjeev Devasia
The Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) city unit plans to shame the Shiv Sena and BMC.

Focusing on the corporation's inefficiency in tackling malaria, it will hold medical camps in seven of the worst malaria-affected wards. Also, free medicines will be distributed and check-ups held.

The unit also plans to fill up potholes on city roads by way of 'shramdhaan' -- that is NCP workers themselves will fill up the potholes and ensure that roads are pothole-free during the festival season.

Earlier, Uddhav Thackeray had blamed migrants for the spread of malaria. North Indian leaders had jumped to the defence of migrants and pointed out that it was BMC, ruled by the Shiv Sena-BJP which should be held responsible for spread of the disease.

Mumbai's Guardian Minister Jayant Patil, who belongs to NCP, had summoned some BMC officials a few days ago and taken them on a brief city tour through potholed streets to point out the condition of city roads and what they should do to improve it.

NCP city unit President Narendra Verma said the BMC was irresponsible. "Uddhav is now coming out to show he cares for the people. Why didn't they do anything earlier?" Verma asked.

"When the city was reeling under water shortage, there was 700 mld (million litres per day) leakage of water and to stop it the BMC spent Rs 200 crore. The BMC is allotted a budget of Rs 2,200 crore for disease control and just see the state of affairs in the city," he said.

Son of Revenue Minister Narayan Rane, Nitesh, has jumped into the fray with his Swabhimaan Sanghatana and claims they will undertake fogging in parts of the city.
