A lesson for BJP

By: Javed Rehman Khan
Voters chose Congress over BJP due to hate speeches by Narendra Modi, Varun Gandhi says Javed Rehman Khan

Indians have voted for the mild-mannered, soft-spoken and tough-minded Dr Manmohan Singh as the prime minister for a second time. He seems to have become a seasoned politician who has earned his political spurs.

Muslims all over India have returned to the Congress mainly due to BJP promoting Narendra Modi and Varun Gandhi's speech in their campaign. Instead of condemning Varun, the BJP supported him.  The Muslims voted for the Congress to ensure that the BJP stayed out. Credit should go to Rahul Gandhi for daring to go alone in UP and Bihar despite pressure from the SP and RJD.

We think elections are swung only by caste considerations and by issues raised during the campaigns, but Rahul's example shows us this need not be true. This may well prove to be the most enduring and encouraging lesson of this election.
