The American tech giant, 'Apple' has announced a Rs 100 crore investment in India as part of its broader plan to become carbon neutral across its entire footprint by 2030.

The investment will be made in partnership with one of the country's major renewable energy developers, CleanMax and will support the creation of over 150 megawatts of new clean energy capacity. The trillion dollar company said that this would be enough to power nearly 1.5 lakh Indian households every year, with room for further expansion in the coming years.

Strengthening clean energy in Apple's supply chain

The company said the initiative is aimed at increasing the use of renewable energy across its supply chain operations in India.

The American multinational tech company had earlier worked with CleanMax on rooftop solar projects that now supply 100 per cent renewable energy to its offices and retail stores in India.

Sarah Chandler, Apple's Vice President of Environment and Supply Chain Innovation, said, "our commitment to the environment is also a driving force for innovation across the company and around the world." She added, "we are proud to expand our efforts to invest in India's clean energy economy and protect the country's precious natural resources."

Tackling plastic pollution with WWF-India

Alongside clean energy investments, Apple is teaming up with WWF-India to strengthen recycling and waste management systems. The initiative focuses on collecting, sorting and recovering materials with full traceability to stop plastic from polluting rivers, oceans and soil.

The initiative builds on WWF-India's earlier work with Saahas Zero Waste in Goa and is now being expanded to new regions, including Coimbatore, with support from local authorities, communities and waste workers. The aim is to build a more effective circular waste system that benefits both the environment and the people involved.

Supporting green startups in India

Apple has also partnered with impact investor Acumen to support six early-stage green enterprises in India. The programme provides grants along with mentorship, technical support and access to networks, working in areas such as waste management, circular economy solutions, regenerative agriculture and sustainable livelihoods.

The company has previously supported Acumen's clean energy programmes. Some of the supported ventures include:

-Saptkrishi, which offers low-cost storage solutions like Sabjikothi to help small farmers reduce crop losses
-Yotuh Energy, which is developing electric refrigerated trucks for cleaner transport of food and medicines
-Mowo Fleet, which creates livelihood opportunities by training women as electric vehicle drivers and entrepreneurs

Part of Apple's global climate roadmap

The iOS maker company said that these initiatives are part of its global environmental strategy to become carbon neutral by 2030.

It's latest Environmental Progress Report showed that it had reduced global greenhouse gas emissions by over 60 per cent compared to 2015 levels, even as its revenue rose by 78 per cent during the same period.

Apple Inc is focusing on renewable energy, recycled materials, water stewardship and zero waste across its operations. The India projects combine direct investment, waste recovery and startup support as the company tries to lower its environmental impact in a key market.
