GST Council meeting rescheduled to October 7 amid BRICS Leader's Summit clash

The meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is likely to be rescheduled on October 7, according to news agency IANS.

The 57th meeting of the GST Council was scheduled for September 12 at New Delhi and the BRICS Leaders' Summit will also take place from September 12-13, and to avoid this clash, the GST Council meeting will be postponed. The venue is likely to remain unchanged.

The preparatory meetings of government officers for the GST meeting too have been rescheduled from earlier September 11. It will be held on October 5 from 3 pm and on October 6 from 11 am onwards, ahead of the Council meeting on October 7, the IANS reported citing sources.

What is likely to be discussed during the Council Meeting?

During the Council meeting, discussions on simplification in GST registration of large businesses, pending issues related to input tax credit, refunds, GST compliance are likely to be covered. As per IANS, the proposals to ease restrictions on certain input tax credit claims and address the problem of accumulated credits under the inverted duty structure is on the agenda. Besides, automation and other changes in GST registration cancellation is also likely to be discussed during the council meeting.

At present, there is no uniformity in the procedure followed by the central GST formation and various state formations in granting GST registration to large businesses who pass on credit over Rs 2.5 lakh per month, as per PTI. This creates uncertainty in the minds of taxpayers.

Council had restructured rates and slabs in 2025

The 56th GST Council meeting had taken place on September 3-4, 2025, during which the Centre and states decided on a major restructuring of GST rates and slabs.

Effective September 22, 2025, GST became a two-tier structure of 5 and 18 per cent, and a highest 40 per cent rate only for ultra luxury and sin goods, replacing the four slabs of 5, 12, 18, and 28 per cent, which was in place since July 1, 2017, as per PTI.

The GST Council in its September 2025 meeting had already approved a simplified GST registration scheme for small and low-risk business and the same was rolled out from November 1.

About 1.68 crore businesses are currently registered under GST.
