The domestic equity benchmark indices extended their gains to the second day on Tuesday, amid an easing in global crude oil prices that decline below the USD 100 per barrel mark. The buying in private sector bank stocks and Tata Group's retail arm Trent also provided the fillip.
The 30-share BSE Sensex soared 685.34 points, or 0.95 per cent, to settle at 73,067.81. The 50-share NSE Nifty surged 220.35 points, or 0.98 per cent, to end at 22,776.10.
Among the 30 Sensex constituents, Trent gained 12.78 per cent on a strong Q2 earnings report. Kotak Mahindra Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance Industries, InterGlobe Aviation, Eternal and Asian Paints were among the gainers. Tech Mahindra, Titan, Bajaj Finance, ITC and Ultra Tech Cement were among the laggards.
"Among the sectoral indices, Capital Market and chemicals rallied by over 2.44 percent, while IT shed nearly 2 percent," Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities said.
However, investors also remained cautious ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's policy decision, with the focus firmly on the central bank's inflation outlook and guidance on further policy tightening, Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments said.
"Volatility is likely to be high in tomorrow session on account of the RBI monetary policy outcome," Pabitro Mukherjee, Deputy Vice President Research, Bajaj Broking said.
On Monday, the benchmark indices snapped their four-day losing streak, and the Sensex gained 472.77 points, or 0.66 per cent, to settle at 72,382.47, while the Nifty advanced 133.80 points, or 0.60 per cent, to end at 22,555.75.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, declined 1.70 per cent to USD 98.59 per barrel, according to news agency PTI.
"Crude oil prices slipped below the USD 100 mark after a large G7 stockpile release and alternative supplies through pipelines helped offset disruptions to vessel movements through the Strait of Hormuz. Coupled with strong Q2 business updates from financials and retail along with supportive global cues, the decline in oil prices improved investors' sentiment and supported a rebound from the oversold levels," Nair said.
On Monday, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the market as they offloaded equities worth Rs 4,699.14 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) purchased equities worth Rs 5,181.62 crore, as per the exchange data.
In Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 index and Hang Seng index ended in positive territory, while South Korea's Kospi quoted lower.
