Project Roshni
A life-changing eye care initiative, Project Roshni - Vision for All, implemented by Making The Difference Charitable Trust in collaboration with the International Gemological Institute (IGI), has successfully screened 7,999 diamond workers at the Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB), Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai.
This large-scale CSR healthcare campaign has not only addressed vision problems but also brought awareness about preventive eye care to India's gem and jewellery workforce - a community whose livelihood depends on visual precision.
Empowering Vision through Action
According to the IGI report, the project screened 7,999 individuals, distributed 6,207 corrective spectacles, and provided nutrition kits and certificates of appreciation to all participants.
Clinical findings revealed that 86% of beneficiaries were found with some form of vision error, while 54% reported dry eye conditions, primarily caused by long working hours and precision-based visual strain. Another 24% were diagnosed with age-related vision issues, highlighting the need for regular vision monitoring.
Transformative Impact
The impact highlights section shows that over 4,000 individuals received personalised counselling on eye care and dry eye management, while more than 8,500 people were made aware of the importance of routine eye checkups every six months.
"A very high 75% of participants required corrective spectacles," reflecting a widespread need for visual correction among diamond workers. Additionally, 1,922 participants were diagnosed with presbyopia - an age-related condition and were guided on corrective care and follow-up.
A Model CSR Partnership
Project Roshni - Vision for All stands as a testament to how collaborative CSR initiatives can deliver measurable social impact.
By combining IGI's commitment to community welfare with MTD's grassroots implementation expertise, the project has successfully created a model of preventive healthcare for occupationally vulnerable communities.
The future follow-up plan includes counselling for 4,346 individuals diagnosed with dry eye, further medical referrals for 46 glaucoma-suspect cases, and sustained awareness campaigns in 2026.

"I have recently joined IGI, and I am truly happy to be associated with an organisation that is doing such meaningful work for the betterment of society. Project Roshni - Vision for All reflects IGI's commitment to creating real, positive change beyond the diamond industry." - Mr Siddharth Sule - Head Marketing
"We extend our heartfelt appreciation to NGO MTD for their commendable work and to IGI for their support. At a time when many engage in CSR, helping 7,999 people improve their vision truly stands out. With rising screen exposure and increasing vision issues-even in children-this initiative becomes even more meaningful. We remain committed to giving back and thank MTD, Project Roshni, IGI, and all partners for their dedication." - Shri Kirit Bhansali - Chairman GJEPC
"The key outcome was increased awareness. Many workers learned that viewing diamonds doesn't harm the eyes; strain comes from prolonged focus without blinking. Screenings showed 86% already use spectacles or have vision issues, making eye-care guidance crucial. These at-risk individuals will now be monitored by BDB. Inspired by Making The Difference NGO's Project Roshni, this BDB-supported initiative aims to safeguard workers' wellbeing and will continue to expand." - Shri Mehul Shah - Vice President - Bharat Diamond Bourse
