Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed a Seafarers' Emergency Support Network at the recently concluded 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi to protect commercial mariners caught in conflicts across global shipping lanes.
Welcoming Prime Minister Modi's proposal, Chief Executive Officer of Anglo-Eastern Univan Group, Capt Bjorn Hojgaard said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposal for a Seafarers Emergency Support Network is timely. Seafarers keep global trade moving. Yet when geopolitical crises escalate, they can find themselves far from home, operating amid rapidly changing threats and considerable uncertainty. A network connecting maritime authorities and diplomatic groups could provide a stronger framework for distress alerts, medical assistance, family communication and evacuation. Prime Minister Modi's proposal is an opportunity to turn international goodwill into practical action.
Capt Bjorn Hojgaard said, "As a ship manager, we see first-hand the importance of preparedness, coordination and timely support when seafarers face difficult situations. Our experience is that such a network must do more than create another emergency contact list. Information must move quickly. Responsibilities must be clear. The right authorities must be able to act together, often across several jurisdictions. The information reaching vessels must also be timely, verified and specific to their circumstances. Crews do not need more alerts. They need clear, practical guidance that reflects the vessel, voyage and evolving security environment."
