Amit Dutta, Chief Operating Officer, Jyoti Structures Ltd, discusses the factors driving the company's growth and its approach to the next phase of transmission infrastructure expansion. He highlights JSL's integrated EPC capabilities, expanded manufacturing capacity, focus on execution readiness, growing international presence and the opportunities emerging from India's renewable energy and grid expansion.

What is driving Jyoti Structures' recent growth, and do you see this momentum continuing ?

The growth we are seeing today is supported by continued investment in infrastructure and expanding opportunities in the transmission sector. As projects become larger and more complex, strong engineering, testing, manufacturing, and execution capabilities will be increasingly important to meet evolving requirements and capture these opportunities.

On the manufacturing side, our second Nashik facility is fully operational and has increased fabrication output at a time when demand is rising. We have also upgraded our tower testing station at Ghoti to support higher voltage requirements. These additions help us maintain schedules and equip us to take more work.

Our focus remains on executing projects with discipline and maintaining delivery reliability. If we continue to plan well, coordinate closely across functions, and deliver projects - we believe the growth momentum can remain sustainable.

Jyoti Structures has been in the industry for over five decades. What has kept the company relevant through changing energy cycles ?

Since 1974, JSL has evolved alongside the transmission sector and today operates as an integrated EPC company across engineering, manufacturing, testing, procurement, construction, and commissioning.

Engineering capability has remained an important differentiator for us. Transmission projects increasingly require customised solutions for different terrains, loading conditions, foundation requirements, and higher-voltage configurations.

What has differentiated the company is its continued investment in capabilities aligned with industry requirements. Beyond transmission lines, we have expanded our expertise across substations, specialised foundation works, underground cabling, and OPGW installations, enabling us to support a broader range of grid infrastructure projects.

Our execution experience is equally important. JSL has delivered more than 37,000 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and over 1,800 high-voltage substation bays across diverse geographies and project environments. This experience has helped us build strong technical, operational, and project management capabilities that remain relevant as networks become larger and more complex.

What does the Sri Lanka transmission project mean for Jyoti Structures' international ambitions ?

International business has been an important part of JSL's growth trajectory. Over the years, we have executed projects across more than 50 countries, working across diverse regulatory frameworks, technical standards, terrains, and operating conditions.

The Sri Lanka project is an extension of that experience. It strengthens our presence in a region where investments in grid infrastructure and renewable energy integration are increasing. It also reflects our approach of pursuing international opportunities with strong local partnerships and leveraging JSL's transmission EPC experience.

Our partnership with Hayleys Fentons combines local market knowledge with JSL's transmission EPC expertise, creating a strong platform for project delivery. Beyond the project itself, it reinforces our commitment to supporting critical power infrastructure and strengthens our position in international markets where transmission investment continues to grow.

How do in-house design, manufacturing, testing, and execution capabilities improve project delivery ?

Transmission projects involve multiple technical and operational interfaces, making coordination critical to successful execution.

JSL's integrated EPC model enables engineering, procurement, manufacturing, testing, and project teams to work in close alignment throughout the project lifecycle. This improves visibility across project requirements and allows teams to respond more effectively to design changes, site conditions, and execution challenges.

For projects spread across long transmission corridors, this alignment becomes especially valuable. Engineering decisions, manufacturing schedules, logistics, and site execution often have to move in parallel.

The result is stronger planning, better resource utilisation, improved quality control, and faster decision-making. For customers, this translates into greater delivery certainty and more predictable project outcomes, particularly on large assignments.

Why did Jyoti Structures expand its Nashik manufacturing facility, and what does it enable ?

The decision to increase tower-making output at Nashik to about 81,000 tonnes was driven by a clear market requirement. India's National Electricity Plan targets to expand the transmission network from 5.09 lakh ckm (as on June 2026) to 6.48 lakh ckm by 2032. Much of this network will carry renewable power from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and the south to demand centres elsewhere in the country. It equips us to execute projects at 765 kV and 800 kV HVDC.

The expanded facility also provides greater flexibility when several assignments are running at the same time. Shop drawings, which provide the detailed specifications and dimensions needed to manufacture each structure, move through CNC machines and six galvanising baths equipped with automated temperature controls, improving accuracy and consistency.

Together with Raipur, annual output will exceed 100,000 metric tonnes. This will give us additional headroom to support multiple large transmission assignments simultaneously while maintaining the quality and delivery standards our customers expect.

As renewable energy capacity rises in India, how is Jyoti Structures preparing for the next phase of transmission growth ?

The next phase of transmission growth will be defined as much by execution speed as by engineering capability. Renewable energy projects are being developed at a pace that requires transmission infrastructure to be planned and delivered within increasingly compressed timelines. That places a different set of demands on EPC contractors than it did a decade ago.

Our preparation is focused on improving readiness across the project lifecycle. This includes strengthening planning processes, improving visibility into procurement and resource requirements, and ensuring that project teams are equipped to manage larger and more geographically dispersed assignments. As transmission corridors expand across multiple states, the ability to coordinate land access, logistics, local stakeholders, and construction activities becomes increasingly important.

We are introducing more technology-enabled controls in areas such as logistics visibility, workforce management, and project monitoring to improve execution efficiency across large and dispersed project sites.

We are also investing in the people side of the business. Transmission projects require specialised engineering and execution expertise, and developing experienced teams is a long-term effort. Building depth within the organisation is essential as project volumes increase.

The opportunity ahead is significant, but delivery will remain the defining factor. Our focus is on ensuring that we have the systems, resources, and execution capacity required to support the next stage of grid expansion and renewable energy integration.

What gives Indian EPC companies an edge in global markets today ?

Indian power-transmission companies have a strong proposition in emerging and mid-cost markets, particularly where projects require technical capability along with cost discipline.

A key advantage comes from the cost structure. Indian companies have developed strong engineering and execution capabilities while operating with relatively competitive engineering and labour costs. This allows them to take on technically demanding projects at competitive costs.

India has also been a demanding environment in which to build this experience. Contractors have worked across long-distance transmission, high-voltage lines, substations, renewable-energy evacuation and HVDC, often across difficult terrain, extreme weather and challenging right-of-way conditions.

The opportunity is also growing. Rising electricity demand, renewable capacity and grid investment are creating greater requirements for transmission infrastructure. As new generation and industrial loads come up, the ability to build transmission capacity reliably and efficiently will become increasingly important.
