If you consider, using a computer meant opening apps and doing things step by step; that's the traditional idea. You opened your browser to search, your calendar to check your schedule, or a document to write something. Now, AI is changing this routine. Instead of telling the computer every step, you can simply explain what you want. An AI assistant can then find the right tools and handle parts of the job.

The idea is still new, yet major tech companies are already moving in this direction. Google is turning Android into what it calls an ‘intelligence system,' while Microsoft is making Windows more ready for AI agents.

The race is no longer only about building a smarter chatbot. Companies now want AI to become part of the system that runs the device.

How AI-Native Operating Systems Work

An AI-native operating system places AI closer to the device's core. Instead of opening a separate chatbot, users could ask the system to perform a task across different apps.

Imagine asking your phone to find your holiday photos, put them into an album, and share them with your family. If you have a normal phone, you'd open the gallery, select the pictures, create the album, and then share it.

An AI-based system could handle much of this after receiving one simple request. Google is already testing this idea through Android. Its AppFunctions system lets apps tell the operating system which actions they can perform. AI agents can then discover these actions and use them when a user asks for something.

The company has already shown examples with Samsung Gallery. Users can ask Gemini to find certain pictures without manually searching through folders. Gemini can also work with apps such as Calendar, Notes, and Tasks.

Android 17 takes the idea further. Google says the update marks the start of its move from an operating system toward an ‘intelligence system.' AI agents can use app functions to carry out tasks while working with information stored on the device.

Microsoft is following a similar path with Windows. At Build 2026, Microsoft said Windows is becoming an agent-ready platform. It introduced Microsoft Execution Containers, which give AI agents a controlled space to perform tasks. The goal is to let agents work while keeping their actions inside limits set by the operating system.

Windows 365 for Agents also gives businesses cloud PCs where AI agents can carry out work in a managed environment.

The hardware matters too. New Windows PCs are being built with dedicated AI chips called NPUs. These chips can handle some AI tasks directly on the device instead of sending everything to the cloud.

Why Companies Want AI Inside the OS

The biggest reason is simple: AI becomes much more useful when it can take action. A chatbot can tell you how to book a flight. An AI agent could potentially search for options, compare them, fill in details, and prepare the booking. A chatbot can explain how to organize files. An agent could potentially find and sort them after getting permission.

These changes could save users time. Even businesses also see a major opportunity: workers use many different tools every day, and moving between email, documents, spreadsheets, calendars, browsers, and company systems can take a lot of time. AI can take over these tasks easily and do them more efficiently.

Microsoft sees this as a major change in the workplace. The company says businesses will need systems that enable agents to work across areas such as software development, support, finance, HR, and operations.

Google is also pushing AI agents into more parts of daily life. Its Android work includes tasks such as food orders, grocery shopping, and rideshare bookings. Users can watch an automated task and take control when needed.

Still, giving AI more control creates a new problem. An agent that can read files, use apps, or make changes can also make mistakes. A wrong action could delete information, send the wrong message, or make an unwanted purchase.

Security will therefore become just as important as intelligence. Microsoft says AI agents need built-in operating system protection because they can now read files, use services, and modify digital environments. User control will matter too. People need to know what an agent is doing and when it needs permission.

The Operating System Could Become the AI's New Home

AI-native operating systems are still taking shape. Google and Microsoft are both moving AI deeper into Android and Windows, while hardware makers are building more powerful devices for local AI.

The biggest change may come when people stop thinking about which app they need. Instead, they may simply tell the device what they want. The shift will not happen overnight. AI can still make mistakes, and many tasks will need human approval. Privacy and security will also decide how much freedom people are willing to give these systems.

Still, the direction is clear. The operating system of the future may do more than launch apps and manage files. It could understand what users want and handle many of the steps for them.

The winner of this race may not be the company with the smartest chatbot. It could be the company that builds the most useful and trusted AI system around it.
