Education and Early Career

Vazgen Gevorkyan was born in June 1971 in the Armenian village of Oshakan. He graduated from an Armenian-language school in Yerevan in 1988, choosing to study in his native language at a time when other educational paths were often viewed as more prestigious.

From 1988 to 1993, he studied geology at Yerevan State University. In 1996, he began a two-year management program at the Academy of National Economy, which he has described as a formative experience in shaping his professional approach.

In 2003, he earned a PhD in Economics with a dissertation focused on labor efficiency and productivity - areas that would later define his approach in both banking and hospitality. The following year, he completed an MBA with a concentration in banking.

A New Philosophy in Banking

The early 1990s marked a period of transformation within the domestic financial sector. One financial institution, initially conservative in its operations, began evolving under a leadership model that prioritized autonomy, strategic coherence, and a values-based culture.

Closely associated with this transformation, Mr. Gevorkyan introduced a delegation-oriented management approach. He empowered qualified professionals with significant responsibility while maintaining a focus on broader strategic direction. This structure fostered a culture of trust and accountability, grounded in core values of honesty, innovation, reliability, and transparency. These principles played a key role in reshaping internal service standards and deepening customer engagement.

Technological advancement was a cornerstone of the bank's evolution. In 2000, it gained access to the SWIFT international network, laying the groundwork for modernization. By 2005, the bank entered the banking card market and soon integrated with the MasterCard Europe system. In 2008, it strengthened its capital base through a private bond placement. These milestones were accompanied by cultural rebranding and modernization of client services.

A particularly impactful shift came with the adoption of a human-centric digital banking strategy. The bank joined the UNISTREAM system in 2012, expanding its international remittance services. By 2015, it rebranded as Evocabank, focusing on mobile-first convenience while maintaining high service standards across its branch network.

The launch of the EvocaTouch platform exemplified this shift - a digital interface that enabled seamless transactions for users of any bank, emphasizing accessibility and inclusive service design.

During this period, the bank received recognition from international financial publications and industry bodies for its digital innovation and client-centered approach. It also supported a range of cultural and entrepreneurial initiatives, including those that promoted women's participation in business.

In 2020, Mr. Gevorkyan stepped away from the bank's leadership and ownership, entrusting its future to a seasoned team of professionals.

LES Art Resort and a Human-Centered Approach to Hospitality

In 2007, Mr. Gevorkyan acquired land in a pristine natural area with the vision of developing a countryside resort that would offer a distinctive guest experience. Construction was completed in 2013, but the project gained renewed strategic focus in 2016.

The resort was guided by a development model that combined operational discipline with emotional connection. Gevorkyan sought to create not just a place to stay, but a destination guests would want to return to. His approach emphasized team empowerment and an Agile, feedback-informed management system. A structured program of international staff training was introduced, and the resort expanded its offerings with wellness, spa, and sports facilities.

LES Art Resort went on to receive multiple awards, culminating in 2023 with honors in three categories at a national hotel awards event: countryside hospitality, architectural design, and promotional excellence.

The management culture at LES Art Resort reflects Gevorkyan's broader leadership style - systematic delegation, continuous team development, and innovation centered around guest experience. Even after stepping back from daily operations in 2022-2023, the systems he established continue to support high performance and service excellence.

Social Impact and Community Development

Since stepping away from commercial enterprise, Mr. Gevorkyan has focused on community development, applying his expertise in banking and management to support projects that drive long-term societal value. He advises organizations engaged in regional infrastructure development, economic opportunity, and cultural preservation.

His areas of focus in Armenia include:

Key initiatives include Dilijan Revitalization: he advises on projects in the northern resort town, including eco-transport systems, upgraded recreational areas and other initiatives.

Rather than assuming operational roles, Mr. Gevorkyan offers high-level strategic guidance, helping local teams navigate complex developmental challenges.

Expanding His Impact Abroad

Mr. Gevorkyan has also contributed in an advisory role to a U.S.-based real estate initiative. A groundbreaking ceremony held on December 6, 2024, marked the beginning of a new development combining residential and commercial functions. While not involved in day-to-day management, he views the project as a model for elevating urban quality of life through integrated, mixed-use design.
