India stands at a defining moment in its development journey. As the country aspires to become a global innovation and knowledge powerhouse, the conversation around education is increasingly shifting from what young people learn, to how they learn, and whether that learning genuinely equips them for the future.
The National Education Policy 2020 envisions a shift towards experiential, inquiry-driven, and competency-based learning. It recognises that preparing young people for the future requires more than memorisation and examination performance. Yet for millions of adolescents, particularly those studying in government schools and underserved communities, this vision remains far from reality.
The Numbers Tell a Clear Story
The infrastructure gap only reinforces this challenge. According to UDISE+ 2023-24 data, only 44% of government schools have functional computers for teaching, compared with 71% of private schools. Internet access is available in just over half of schools, limiting students' opportunities to engage in technology-enabled and experiential learning.
But the challenge extends beyond access to devices or information. The real task is to create learning environments where children develop curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and the confidence to apply what they know, to imagine, solve problems, and innovate. At its best, STEAM education is both a pedagogy and a mindset that nurtures these capabilities through hands-on, interdisciplinary learning.
Democratising STEAM education, therefore, requires more than updating the curriculum or setting up dedicated labs. It demands building a sustained culture of experiential learning in the schools that educate the majority of India's children, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to develop the skills needed for a rapidly changing world.
Why STEAM, and Not Just STEM
Experiential learning is one powerful pathway forward. When students learn through doing, asking questions, testing ideas and building solutions, education becomes more engaging and more relevant. But future readiness extends beyond technical knowledge. Young people also need creativity, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills to apply what they know in the real world. This is why the conversation must shift from STEM to STEAM.
The inclusion of the arts is deliberate and essential. Art cultivates imagination, empathy, and contextual understanding. It develops communication skills and the capacity for human-centred design. It is this integration that transforms technical competence into meaningful innovation. A student who can code but cannot empathise with the problem they are solving, or communicate their solution effectively, is only partially equipped for the world ahead. Creativity and design thinking are not supplementary to technical learning; they are what make it useful and humane.
This is increasingly reflected in global workforce data. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 identifies analytical thinking and creative thinking among the most important skills shaping tomorrow's workforce. These capabilities grow through experimentation: the foundation of effective STEAM education.
Effective STEAM learning environments should be designed as integrated ecosystems. Environments that encourage hands-on exploration, collaborative learning, teacher facilitation, and curriculum-linked experiences can help bridge the gap between knowledge and application. The objective is to enable young people to develop the confidence and capability to question, create, innovate, and learn continuously.
Education as a Pathway to Social Mobility
The implications extend well beyond academic outcomes. India's secondary school dropout rate stood at 10.9% in 2023-24, according to UDISE+ data. Parliamentary records further reveal that over 65.7 lakh children were identified as out of school over the past five years, including nearly 29.8 lakh adolescent girls. Disengagement from learning often begins long before a student formally leaves school. When education feels disconnected from everyday life, motivation gradually erodes.
Experiential learning directly addresses this challenge by making learning meaningful and relevant - giving young people a reason to stay curious, stay engaged, and stay connected to education.
What Needs to Happen
As India continues its journey toward a knowledge-driven, innovation-led economy, investments in future-ready learning will become increasingly critical. The challenge before us is not simply to ensure that children acquire information; it is to create the conditions for them to develop the skills, mindsets, and confidence to use that knowledge effectively.
Preparing adolescents for the future requires integrating disciplinary knowledge with life skills. Scientific concepts gain meaning when combined with creativity, communication, collaboration, ethical reasoning, and problem-solving. It is this combination that enables young people not only to understand the world but also to shape it.
What is needed is a model that is teacher-enabled, curriculum-aligned, and designed specifically for the conditions under which government schools actually operate. Not a scaled-down version of what elite schools offer, but a model built from the ground up for the communities it serves.
The future will belong to those who can learn continuously, think critically, collaborate effectively, and adapt to changing circumstances. Preparing young people for that future is not the responsibility of educators alone - it requires a collective commitment from policymakers, civil society organisations, communities, and the private sector.
The true measure of STEAM education lies not just in the number of laboratories established or technologies introduced, but in its ability to empower every young person to think boldly, create confidently, and solve complex problems with purpose. Our aim is not merely to prepare adolescents for the jobs of tomorrow but to equip them to become responsible citizens, innovators, and changemakers who can build a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous future.
