Alia Bhatt and Sharvari's spy thriller Alpha opened to mixed reviews from critics and fans alike on Friday, June 3. The lukewarm response for the first female-led spy film in YRF's spy universe was reflected in its box office numbers as well. After recording the lowest opening in the spy universe on day 1, the film recorded the weakest opening weekend too.
According to Sacnilk, Alpha earned Rs 9.25 crore on opening day across 7,534 shows. This was followed by Rs 11.50 crore on Saturday. On Sunday, the film witnessed a modest jump, adding another Rs 13.25 crore across 7,439 shows to its collections.
This brings Apha's total India gross collections to Rs 40.80 crore and total India net collections to Rs 34 crore so far.
Talking of its overseas numbers, the film collected Rs 5.00 crore on Day 3, that is Sunday, taking its total overseas gross to Rs 18.00 crore so far. As a result, Alpha's worldwide gross stands at Rs 58.80 crore.
Interestingly, compared to the preceding spy films from the YRF universe, which were headlined by male superstars, Alpha witnessed a slow start, which was followed by a weak weekend run too. The report further mentions, "Alpha currently stands as the weakest release in the franchise in terms of opening weekend collections."
Looking at the opening weekend collections of the previous YRF spy films, Pathaan earned Rs 280.75 crore, War 2 recorded Rs 175.75 crore, and War earned Rs 166.25 crore. Meanwhile, the Tiger franchise earned Rs 114.93 crore, Rs 100.57 crore and Rs 44.50 crore for Tiger Zinda Hai, Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger 3, respectively.
Alpha marks the seventh film in the spy franchise after Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, Tiger 3, War, War 2, and Pathaan. The film, headlined by Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, is directed by Shiv Rawail of The Railway Men fame. It also stars Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol in pivotal roles.
Alpha has faced multiple delays before its theatrical release. It was first scheduled to release on December 25 last year, and later postponed to April this year.
