Months after announcing that he would step away from playback singing, Arijit Singh has made a return with Yeh Awarapan, the title track from Awarapan 2. The song, which released on Monday, reunites the singer with Vishesh Films, the banner that played a pivotal role in launching his Bollywood playback career.
Composed by Amaal Malik and penned by Rashmi Virag, Yeh Awarapan features Emraan Hashmi and captures the themes of love, loss and redemption that defined the original Awarapan. The soulful track has been released by Sony Music India ahead of the film's theatrical release on August 14.
The reunion holds special significance, as Arijit Singh's first Hindi film song, Phir Mohabbat from Murder 2, was also backed by Vishesh Films. Over the years, the singer collaborated with the production house on several memorable tracks, including Muskurane (CityLights), the Khamoshiyan title track, Hamari Adhuri Kahani and Pal from Jalebi.
According to the makers, Yeh Awarapan has been crafted to reflect the emotional world of Shivam Pandit, Emraan Hashmi's iconic character from the franchise.
The song arrives at a particularly emotional moment for fans, as it marks Arijit's first playback release since he announced in January that he would no longer accept new playback assignments.
At the time, the singer had shared a heartfelt note thanking listeners for their unwavering support throughout his journey.
"I am not going to take any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it quits. It was a wonderful journey," he had written.
While Arijit had clarified that he would not be taking up new playback projects, Yeh Awarapan appears to have been completed before that announcement, making it a special release for both the singer and his fans.
Producer Vishesh Bhatt has also described the collaboration as a meaningful continuation of his long-standing association with Arijit. With Amaal Malik's composition, Rashmi Virag's lyrics and Arijit's unmistakable vocals, the track aims to recreate the emotional depth that audiences associate with the Awarapan franchise.
Directed by Nitin Kakkar and written by Bilal Siddiqui, Awarapan 2 stars Emraan Hashmi alongside Disha Patani, Shabana Azmi, Suvinder Vicky, Vijayant Kohli, Atul Kumar and Aniruddh Rawal. Produced by Vishesh Films, the sequel is set to hit cinemas worldwide on August 14, with Yeh Awarapan serving as one of its biggest musical highlights.
