In 1999, director Eduardo Sánchez and producer Gregg Hale showed us the horrors that lurk in the dark woods with The Blair Witch Project (1999). In 2026, according to them, fear rests in a far more unsuspecting place  - social media. Their latest found-footage horror thriller, The Influencer Project, sees content creator Chiara King play a fictionalised version of herself, who receives death threats from a stalker as she travels to Copenhagen for a campaign.
For King, it's surreal to star in a movie executive produced by The Blair Witch Project makers. "I loved The Blair Witch Project. It scared me so much. Working on this was a dream come true as Ed and Gregg shared their insights into creating fear through realism," she told mid-day.
Shooting Mike Nybroe's directorial venture was new territory for King. While the script was shared with her, some scenes were not revealed to her to achieve authenticity. She recalled, "There were some scenes where the makers would say, âYou'll be in this house, but we can't tell you exactly what's going to happen. You'll have to experience it for yourself.' The film explores a relevant fear in the social media age - the idea that people who follow you online may sometimes feel entitled to gain access to you in real life."
As a popular content creator, has King experienced the downside of online fame? She revealed, "I had a stalker targeting me in real life. That made me feel unsafe."
