Kareena Kapoor's Daayra based on Hyderabad rape and murder case? Director Meghna Gulzar reveals

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran are all set to join forces on a new film named Daayra, which is helmed by Raazi filmmaker Meghna Gulzar. At the film's trailer launch event held in Mumbai on Monday, August 31, Meghna broke her silence on whether the crime thriller is based on the 2019 Hyderabad rape and murder case.

Responding to a question by a reporter at the Daayra trailer launch event, the filmmaker explained that the film does not draw from just one incident. Instead, she stated that the team looked at several cases while developing the story.

Meghna shared, "We are touching on so many delicate subjects that having just one perspective, ya sirf ek case ka data aur facts, would have been very restrictive. Kyunki hum jiss muddon ke baat kar rahe hain, they happen all over the country. Aisa nahi hai ki sirf ek desh, state, ya prant mein hota hai. Yeh sab jagah hota hai, aur bohot frequently hota hai, jinn cheezon ke baare mein hum baat kar rahe hain."

Meghna further went on to explain that limiting the film to a single case would have restricted the perspective towards the story and the film. As a result, the team drew from multiple cases instead to capture a common emotional, criminal and judicial thread and eventually blended these elements together to create the film.

About the Hyderabad rape and murder case

The infamous Hyderabad case involved the rape and murder of a 26-year-old veterinary doctor near Shamshabad in Hyderabad. Four men, Mohammed Arif, Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu, Jollu Shiva and Jollu Naveen, were accused and arrested in connection with the crime. Later, they were killed in a police encounter while being carried to the scene of the crime as part of the investigation.

In Daayra, Kareena plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, while Prithviraj portrays DCP Raman Kumar. The recently launched trailer highlights an intriguing push-and-pull between the two officers, who approach the aftermath of a crime that triggers public outrage with two different perspectives.
