Dance on canvas

Like landscapes, I paint dance and therefore call it Dancescapes, says artist Subodh Poddar.

Subodh, who exhibits at Artic Vision from April 28, talks to CS about contemporary art, dance, and Rabindranath Tagore:

Painting simple
There is a fine line between complicated and simple abstraction. Many well-known artists display their egos on their canvas. Very few artists keep in mind the capability of the spectator. For them, it is their prerogative to do what they want to, and they don't really care whether people understand it or not. For me, understanding is as important as beauty. So, I make sure that I paint simple.

My passion for dance
Dance is a complete form of art. It is so vast, I can paint it for ages. I sketch too. I have done live painting shows in foreign countries, where I have painted live dancing figures in just 20 seconds.

Portraying Tagore
Not many people know that Rabindranath Tagore wrote poems in Maithili at the age of 17. In those days, writing poems was considered taboo. So Tagore, adopted a a pen name and wrote the dance ballet Bhanusinher Padavali. He even got it published without anyone's knowledge. I plan to illustrate these Padavalis in my upcoming exhibition.
