Vidyut Jammwal made his Bollywood debut with the 2011 John Abraham-Genelia D'Souza starrer Force, where he played the menacing antagonist Vishnu. He went on to impress audiences with films such as Commando, Khuda Haafiz, IB71 and others. His intense personality, power-packed screen presence, and action skills soon established him as a popular action star. As his career further progressed, Vidyut took on more action-driven roles and fewer films outside the genre.
The Bollywood star, known for his high-octane action moves, reveals that he does not fear being stereotyped; in fact, he embraces the tag that he has become synonymous with. In an exclusive conversation with Mid-Day, the actor addressed the action-hero label that he has carried since the start of his career.
Unlike many actors who worry about being typecast, Vidyut says he always wanted to be recognised for his action skills. When asked if he has ever feared being typecast, the actor said, "I wanted to be typecast. I wanted everybody to say Vidyut does action. I have finally achieved the typecast, and I love it. I wanted to be known for what I do. I wanted to be put in this box that Vidyut can do it and he does action, and he does it so well that there will be a day Street Fighter will call him and make him a part of it, so yes."
Vidyut is set to make his Hollywood debut with the upcoming action film Street Fighter, in which he plays Dhalsim, a skilled yoga practitioner. When asked the Junglee actor if he had to undergo any different kind of physical preparation for the role, he said, "Not the physical prepartion, but I had to understand all the other characters that were in the movie. Every character that Dhalsim has fought, I need to see how they fight with each other. So, that was the homework I had done a lot, which really helped me because I got to know every character."
Street Fighter, directed by Kitao Sakurai, is based on the popular video game franchise of the same name. The film also boasts an ensemble cast comprising Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu and Jason Momoa as Blanka, along with Callina Liang, Joe Anoai, David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes, Andrew Schulz, Eric Andre, Orville Peck, Olivier Richters, Hirooki Goto, Rayna Vallandingham, Alexander Volkanovski and Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson.
The action-adventure film is set to release on October 16 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu
