Ameesha Patel and Sunny Deol's Gadar: Ek Prem Katha celebrates its silver jubilee today. Twenty-five years after its release, the film remains one of Hindi cinema's most enduring blockbusters. Commemorating the milestone, Sunny Deol penned a gratitude note for the audience on social media, thanking them for showering the movie with abundant love and giving it a permanent place in their hearts.
Marking the film's 25th anniversary, Sunny on Instagram wrote, "25 years ago, Gadar and Tara Singh conquered your hearts. 25 saal se pyaar ke rishte ki gaadi chal rahi hai aur aage bhi chalti hi rahegi. Thank you all for giving all of us 25 years of abundant love and making us stay in your hearts; hope we keep staying there."
He signed off the note as his iconic character, "Tara Singh," and not Sunny Deol. Sunny also shared several stills from the blockbuster, taking the audience back to the early 2000s.
The romantic-action thriller was directed by Anil Sharma. It starred Sunny alongside Ameesha Patel and late Amrish Puri, among others. To note, Gadar released alongside Aamir Khan's Lagaan 25 years ago. Both films went on to attain cult status over the years.
The film is among the biggest blockbusters. Centred around the Partition, it depicted a beautiful love story between Tara Singh (Sunny Deol) and Sakina (Ameesha Patel). They both get married; however, things take a bitter turn as Sakina's father forces her to stay in Pakistan and separates her from her family.
A sequel to Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, titled Gadar 2, was theatrically released on August 11, 2023. It also received a positive response from the audience.
Sharing an update on Gadar 3, Anil Sharma told Hindustan Times, "After Utkarsh (Sharma, son-actor) grew up, people started saying Jeete ki kahani laao. But for me, if the Gadar story was a bomb, I would only make Gadar 2 if I got an atom bomb story, and it made history. Now, if I get a nuclear bomb story, then only I will make it. We are working on the script and, God willing, if all goes on track, we will start Gadar 3 next year!"
