Filmmaker Suparn Verma recently opened up about the preparation the team went through for their movie, Haq. The film, which was released in November 2025, stars Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi in the lead roles. The story revolves around Shazia Bano (played by Yami), the wife of a lawyer in 1970s India, whose husband marries another woman. She drags him to court after he refuses to pay her maintenance.

Verma, while recently speaking to BBC Asian Network, opened up about how the team, as well as Yami, prepared for the film. He revealed that Yami had learnt the Holy Quran to prepare for her role in the movie. "We spent almost a year and a half understanding Islamic law," he reportedly said.

The filmmaker further shared that the research for the movie was extensive, also because he said we lived in an "age of misinformation". "Everybody has information, you don't know whether it's right or wrong. In that space, I wanted Haq to be a voice of reason," Suparn Verma added.

About Haq

Haq was produced by Junglee Pictures in association with Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios. The film delves into issues of gender and justice. It also sparked important conversations regarding India's evolving socio-legal landscape. Upon release, Haq received largely positive reviews from critics as well as the audience; however, the response did not translate to box office numbers, as it failed to leave a mark. The film, which was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 40 crore, earned nearly Rs 30 crore throughout its box office run.

Previously, Yami Gautam spoke about Haq's positive reviews on social media and wrote, "The power of ‘Word of mouth'. No foul play or any gimmicks. Straight from our hearts to the audience. Even from a trade & media perspective, I feel a lot of positivity that they want a film like ‘ HAQ' to be a success. It's a rarity & I shall cherish this moment for life."

Haq was released on OTT on January 2, 2026, and has since been streaming on Netflix.
