Midlife crisis in the lives of 3 Idiots

More than 15 years after ‘3 Idiots' (2009) became a cultural phenomenon, director Rajkumar Hirani has revealed that he is still developing a potential follow-up centred on the lives of Rancho, played by Aamir Khan, Farhan, played by R Madhavan, and Raju, played by Sharman Joshi, years later. Speaking to THR India, the director said, "I'm still working on that script. There is a lot of work left" and explained that the story is set 15-20 years after the events of the original film. "It's not about college or anything. They are married and have children now. They are experiencing mid-life crisis, and so we will have to see, now what next?"

The other project

Rajkumar Hirani

Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan are also working on a Dadasaheb Phalke biopic, which is still being developed. Announced in May 2025, the project has seen multiple script revisions as Aamir has pushed for a stronger emotional and theatrical arc. Recent reports suggest that the director is refining the screenplay, with shoot now pushed to 2027.

Too costly to cast?

Ajith Kumar

Cinemagoers may have to wait a while for for Ajith Kumar's next big-screen outing. Film financier and distributor Tiruppur Subramaniam has claimed that the actor's remuneration demands are proving difficult for producers to meet. Speaking to Fine Time Cine, he said, "Ajith Kumar wants the salary he demands, but who is there in the industry to offer it?" He argued that Tamil cinema's biggest studios now expect leading actors to adopt the remuneration model followed by Bollywood stars such as Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. He said, "Ajith should think about doing service to cinema and make films on a profit-sharing basis." With no project officially announced, Ajith's much-anticipated AK64 remains up in the air.
