Dharmendra and Hema Malini married in 1980. Their relationship began after meeting on the sets of Tum Haseen Main Jawaan in 1970. Before that, Dharmendra was already married to his first wife, Prakash Kaur, and had four children. Hema Malini and Dharmendra chose to live separately as he had not divorced his first wife.

When asked if she was ever bothered by scrutiny around their marriage, she said, "We never bothered about any of that. We lived our lives according to us, not for people who wanted to criticise or judge us. We lived with true love. Right from the beginning, we knew we were meant for each other. Nobody could change that."

She added, "I got such a wonderful soulmate. I have memories of him that I will cherish till the end of my life. He supported me in everything I did. If I am doing anything today, it is because of his support and strength. Now I miss that. He is not there, and this void can never be filled."

Dharmendra died at his Mumbai home on November 24, 2025, due to age-related ailments. Earlier, Hema Malini turned emotional while remembering her late husband after receiving the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award on his behalf.
