On Tuesday morning, reports emerged that Alia Bhatt has joined the sequel of Nag Ashwin's Kalki 2898 AD. The reports also claimed that the actress had even shot a few scenes. The news was confused whether she was replacing Deepika Padukone or was roped in for a new role.
Although the filmmakers have remained mum, a spokesperson from the film's team has now clarified to Hindustan Times. Several social media pages cited unknown sources claiming that Alia will play a significant role in the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD. While some initially thought she was replacing Deepika as Sumathi (SUM-80), others believed it was a new role. As the news caught steam, excited fans also made comments like, "Alia Bhatt and Sai Pallavi in one movie?? no one talk to me rn."
Although neither Alia nor the team of Kalki 2898 AD have publicly clarified these rumours, a spokesperson for the film spoke to HT. "No shooting," putting an end to rumours that the actor shot for the film. When asked for confirmation if she has been roped in for the sequel, they replied, "There's no official clarity yet. Someone posted it on social media, and everyone else copied and pasted it as news. There's definitely no clarity regarding her casting yet."
According to recent reports, Alia Bhatt has been cast in a significant role in Kalki 2. While details about her character have been kept tightly under wraps, reports suggested that she will be essaying an important role that is expected to play a key part in the narrative of the sequel.
Reprost further claimed that Alia had already begun filming for the project and recently joined the cast and crew in Hyderabad for the film's second shooting schedule. Sources even suggested that the actress had completed five days of shooting. However, the makers maintained complete secrecy regarding the scope of her role, the duration of her shoot schedule, and how her character would fit into the larger storyline.
Notably, the reports have gained additional attention after Deepika Padukone's exit from the sequel. Deepika played Sumathi, also known as SUM-80, in the first film. However, in 2025, makers announced that the actress was no longer associated with the sequel, making reports of her exit a major talking point among fans of the franchise.
