While Rajpal Yadav was recently enjoying the success of Welcome to the Jungle, he has now faced another legal setback in a cheque bounce case. The Delhi High Court upheld his conviction in multiple cheque bounce cases linked to a loan taken for his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. While modifying his sentence, the court ordered three months' imprisonment.
As per ANI, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma upheld the conviction and modified the sentence awarded earlier by the sessions court. Yadav has also been directed to pay Rs 1.05 crore to the complainant in each of the seven cases. Additionally, the court ordered him to pay Rs 1.04 lakh and Rs 75,000 to the complainant, along with Rs 25,000 to the State. The High Court further directed Yadav's wife, Radha Yadav, to pay Rs 5,51,380 to the complainant in each case.
The High Court directed that the amount of Rs 2.25 crore already deposited before the court and released to the complainant shall be adjusted while computing the liability payable by Yadav.
The court further ordered that the actor shall undergo three months' imprisonment in each of the seven cheque bounce cases, with all the sentences running concurrently. It also directed him to pay the fine imposed by the trial court, observing that failure to pay the fine would entail six months' imprisonment. The court granted Yadav two months' time to either comply with the judgment or avail of legal remedies before the appropriate forum.
Significantly, the High Court declined to grant Yadav the benefit of probation, taking into consideration his overall conduct during the litigation, including repeated violations of undertakings furnished before the court.
The proceedings arose from revision petitions filed by Yadav and his wife challenging the 2019 decision of a sessions court, which had upheld their conviction by a magisterial court in the cheque bounce cases in April 2018.
Back in 2010, Rajpal Yadav reportedly borrowed Rs 5 crore from Delhi-based Murli Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. The film failed at the box office, and as a result, the loan remained unpaid. Court records indicate that seven cheques issued later were dishonoured.
The dispute took a legal turn, and in April 2018, a magisterial court convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife, Radha. The actor was sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment.
In 2024, the court directed the actor to show a sincere effort to repay the dues. However, in February 2026, the court ordered him to surrender, following which he was lodged in Tihar Jail. He was later granted bail on March 18 after the court noted that he had deposited part of the amount.
