With its global theatrical release set for November 5, Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana has secured interim legal protection against piracy. The Bombay High Court has restrained unidentified individuals and digital platforms from unauthorisedly recording, hosting or streaming the film. The order comes after the makers raised concerns over footage from the trailers being leaked online.

Ramayana gets interim protection

As per Bar and Bench, the Bombay High Court on Monday granted a dynamic ad-interim injunction restraining unidentified ‘John Doe' entities and digital platforms from unauthorisedly recording, hosting or streaming the forthcoming film Ramayana. The interim order was passed in a suit filed by Godpower Media Private Limited, apprehending copyright infringement. The Mumbai-based entity holds the copyright and exploitation rights in the film, having acquired all domestic and territorial intellectual property rights.

The suit sought comprehensive protection over the underlying script, characters, footage, lyrics and recordings of the film, which is slated for a global theatrical release on November 5.

The Court was informed that the film was produced at an outlay of Rs 2,000 crore for Part I, with a combined two-part budget of Rs 4,000 crore.

The company told the court that despite strict confidentiality agreements governing exclusive preview screenings, footage from both trailers had allegedly been recorded secretly and circulated online.

It argued that the same could happen once the film reaches theatres, with portions of Ramayana potentially being recorded and uploaded across websites and social media platforms without permission. The court's order covers not just known offenders but also unidentified individuals who may attempt to circulate the film illegally. The dynamic injunction against John Doe defendants is particularly important because it allows action against pirates even when their identities are unknown.

More about Ramayana

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is a two-part adaptation of the Hindu mythological epic. Apart from Ranbir as Lord Ram, it also stars Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman and Yash as Ravana. The film's first instalment is set to release in theatres on November 5, 2026.

The film has received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ahead of its theatrical release. The film has been awarded a 'U' certificate, with a runtime of 3 hours and 15 minutes.
