Shruti Haasan questions traditional ideas of marriage: ‘Who are we doing this for?’

Shruti Haasan has always been vocal about living life on her own terms, and her views on marriage are no different. The actor recently opened up about why she values companionship but does not feel the need to fit into traditional ideas of marriage. She also questioned the need for lavish celebrations and paperwork. This comes after she revealed being open for adoption.

Shruti opened up about her idea of marriage in a podcast with Soha Ali Khan and said, "I really like companionship. But, I have lived my whole life in a way of not fitting in a box. Weirdly, I am very traditional in some things and quite conservative in my approach to certain other things, but that's only because no one forced me to come to that conclusion. I just feel that the paperwork with marriage, the lavish spending, showing, I feel like ‘Who are we doing this for?'"

Shruti further shared, "I enjoy that my partner and I pick each other every day, but not because of the paperwork. That's my fear, otherwise, not really. I came close to marriage and it didn't really scare me that much when push came to shove. No shaming the big spenders, but that always bothers me. Give it to charity!… I am open to adopt. I would really love to just be a mum, but I would also like to try it as an extension of myself in some biological way."

This comes after the actor spoke about her long struggle with PCOS and how being told from a young age that pregnancy could be difficult affected the way she viewed having children. She also said she is open to adoption and would like to become a mother when she feels ready.

She has joined the cast of Call Me Bae Season 2 on Amazon Prime Video, starring alongside Ananya Panday. Shruti Haasan plays a "nayi behen" (new sister) figure to Bae. Her character features an eclectic, boho-chic wardrobe that differs from her personal style. She is also lending her voice for a song in SS Rajamouli's Globetrotter, featuring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra.
