Actor Zeenat Aman has joined a growing list of public figures voicing concern over educator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk's indefinite hunger strike. As Wangchuk's fast entered its 17th day at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, the veteran actor appealed to the government to open a dialogue, saying India must not remain silent while "one of its greatest minds" continues to suffer.
Taking to Instagram, Zeenat shared a photograph of Wangchuk and reflected on his deteriorating health, citing reports that he has begun losing muscle mass and is in severe pain. She also recalled Wangchuk's response when urged to end his fast: "Don't ask me to end my fast. Ask the government why they won't even have a dialogue."
In her note, Zeenat highlighted Wangchuk's contributions to the country, describing him as the founder of SECMOL, the inventor of the Ice Stupa, a pioneer of educational reform in Ladakh and a dedicated environmental activist. She also pointed out that he inspired the beloved character Phunsukh Wangdu, portrayed by Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots. Referring to 3 Idiots, Omi Vaidya, who played Chatur, appealed, "Don't let Phunsukh Wangdu die," highlighting Wangchuk's inspiration behind the iconic character.
Calling him "a brilliant and conscientious man" recognised globally for his work, Zeenat urged the government to engage in peaceful discussions. "We must not become a society that sits back and watches one of its greatest minds be sacrificed," she wrote, adding that India's long tradition of peaceful protest deserves to be met with peaceful dialogue.
Her appeal quickly resonated with fans and fellow members of the film fraternity, many of whom praised the actor for using her voice to support the cause.
Zeenat is not alone in backing Wangchuk. Actor Abhay Deol also expressed solidarity by sharing a photograph of the activist from the protest site on Instagram, accompanied by a broken heart emoji.
Meanwhile, actors Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, writer Arundhati Roy, filmmaker Sanjay Kak and several others have jointly appealed to Wangchuk to end his indefinite fast, stressing that the movement is "a marathon, not a sprint" and that his leadership will be vital in the long run. Actor Prakash Raj has also extended his support for the activist.
According to those associated with the protest, Wangchuk has lost nearly nine kilograms since beginning his fast. While concerns over his health continue to grow, calls for dialogue have become louder, with several prominent voices urging the authorities to engage in discussions before the situation worsens.
