Dua Lipa and Callum Turner's Sicilian wedding has been the talk of the world this week, and for the most part, it has been pure magic. Elton John singing Your Song, Donatella Versace designing the bride's gown, fireworks over Palermo. Absolute fairytale stuff. But behind the glittering guest list and the gorgeous Instagram-worthy moments, a very different story has been unfolding on the streets of Sicily, and the locals have made sure it is being heard.
The three-day celebration, which followed the couple's quiet civil ceremony in London, is reported to have cost a staggering 1.7 million USD, approximately Rs 16.51 crore. To ensure complete privacy for the star-studded event, authorities closed roads, restricted public access to several areas, imposed no-drone zones, and deployed heavy security across parts of the city. For residents trying to go about their daily lives, it was, by all accounts, deeply disruptive.
The response from locals was swift and vocal. Protest signs began appearing across the Palermo city centre, carrying messages like "Palermo belongs to everyone" and "This square is not a private lounge." When some of those posters were taken down, residents responded with graffiti and even more visible displays of frustration. One activist group put out a particularly sharp call to action, urging people in the historic district to hang fake welcome posters from their balconies, a pointed commentary on what they described as the commercialisation of shared public spaces.
Questions were also raised about how local officials approved the use of iconic public sites for private use. Guests stayed at the luxury Villa Igiea, a private cocktail was held at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, and the main ceremony took place at the breathtaking Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria. Several of these are beloved public landmarks, and residents felt their city had been handed over without their consent.
In what was perhaps an attempt to smooth things over, the couple reportedly offered 5,000 EUR around Rs 6.3 lakh to those most affected by the disruption. An insider, however, told The Sun that the gesture did not quite land the way it was intended, noting that the payments and the sheer extravagance of the event do not sit easily alongside the simple, romantic image the couple has been projecting.
None of it, however, stopped the party. Around 200 guests from the worlds of music, film and fashion descended on Sicily for the weekend, including Charli XCX, Donatella Versace, Mark Ronson and Kevin Parker. And Elton John did indeed perform, because when you are Dua Lipa, that is simply how it goes.
A wedding for the ages, with a few complications the couple will probably want to forget.
