Friends cast mourn the death of director James Burrows at 85: 'He looked out for us'

The director of the iconic sitcom Friends, James Burrows, passed away on June 19, at the age of 85. Although the cause of his death is still unknown, the cast of the iconic show took to Instagram to pay heartfelt tributes to the filmmaker

Legendary director James Burrows, best known for directing the iconic Hollywood sitcom FRIENDS, died on June 19. The director, who was also known for numerous episodes of comedy shows such as The Bob Newhart Show, Taxi, Frasier, Will and Grace, and Mike and Molly, breathed his last at the age of 85.

Friends director James Burrows dies

James Burrows has directed more than 50 television pilots and also co-created the television series Cheers. In his career spanning more than 50 years, Burrows has won 11 Emmy Awards and five Directors Guild of America Awards, along with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Although the cause of his death remains unknown, his passing has left many in the industry mourning. He left behind a lasting legacy that will be cherished for years. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Easton and daughter Ellie Burrows, from his first wife.

Friends cast pay tribute

The Friends cast members, including David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc, who played the iconic roles of Ross, Phoebe and Joey in the sitcom, mourned the passing of Burrows. LeBlanc mourned the loss of Burrows and wrote, "Jimmy, words cannot describe the impact and influence you had on us and everyone who was lucky enough to have known you. You sir, are a true icon on so many levels. Well wishes in your next act. You will be missed. God Bless."

Meanwhile, Schwimmer shared two photos of himself with Burrows, one of which included LeBlanc from the sets of Friends on Instagram.

Sharing the post, Schwimmer wrote, "Jimmy Burrows brought out the best in every actor he ever worked with, and elevated every show he directed, making it funnier and more moving than anyone expected. His warmth, humility and generosity made us feel safe, like family, and I'm sure we weren't the only cast to feel that way. He looked out for us, on camera and off." He added that Burrows became another "father figure" for him.

Lisa Kudrow, who played Phoebe Buffay in Friends, posted a throwback picture with Burrows on her Instagram Stories without any caption. Meanwhile, Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox, who played Rachel and Monica in the iconic series, have not yet reacted to the death of the filmmaker.
