Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow is giving her breakfast routine an Indian twist. The actor and Goop founder recently shared a glimpse of her morning meal on Instagram, featuring savoury besan chilla, eggs and mint chutney and the desi combination quickly caught the attention of her followers.
In her latest breakfast video, Paltrow gets to work on a batter using besan, or ground chickpea flour, along with spices, chopped onions, tomatoes and grated ginger. Once the mixture is whisked together, she pours the batter onto a hot pan to make the chillas.
She then turns her attention to the eggs, cracking three into a separate non-stick pan and cooking them with a little water. The final plate gets an unusual but hearty addition: leftover short ribs from the previous night's meal.
Paltrow serves the freshly cooked chillas with the eggs, topping them with a generous spoonful of green mint chutney. Sharing the breakfast video on Instagram, she captioned it, "Mint chutney eggs and savoury Indian chilla pancakes with last night's leftover short ribs boyfriendbreakfast."
The combination may be unconventional, but Paltrow appears to be firmly in favour of making breakfast both filling and fuss-free.
The Indian-inspired breakfast soon attracted comments; while some fans enjoyed seeing a desi staple on her plate, others criticised it heavily. One user wrote, "Somebody get them a GI tag for Besan Chillas now ⦠they'll be claiming it soon anyway! I hope they don't use uncle Trump to ban Indian's from making Chillas after that like they tried to GI tag our Basmati in 1997â¦" Other users said, "Boils my blood."
One user, meanwhile, commented, "Trust goras to copy EVERYTHING, from any and everywhere and call it their own."
This isn't Paltrow's first time documenting her breakfast experiments. The actor has previously shared a one-pan breakfast featuring eggs, turkey sausage, leafy greens, cherry tomatoes and fresh herbs. She also noted that some of the vegetables and herbs came from her own garden.
While besan chilla is a familiar breakfast staple across Indian households, Paltrow's version comes with her own Hollywood-style spin. Pairing the savoury pancake with eggs, mint chutney and leftover short ribs makes for a decidedly unconventional plate, but one that seems to have won over at least some of her followers while others criticised her.
For Paltrow, whose Goop empire has long revolved around wellness, food and lifestyle, the breakfast video offers another peek into what lands on her plate when the cameras aren't rolling. Gwyneth Paltrow is also supposed to star in a film adaptation of Belle Burden's Strangers.
