Hollywood horror film Obsession has emerged as an unexpected global cinematic sensation, despite being made on a modest budget. Along with the rest of the world, the horror-drama is also finding a strong audience in India. Now, director Curry Barker has reacted to the film's surprising performance in the country.

During an interview with Variety India, Barker stated that he had not expected Obsession to become a major success, adding that the scale of the box office numbers, in India and elsewhere, had taken him by surprise.

"I definitely did not expect Obsession to be a big hit in India. I didn't expect it to be a big hit anywhere, really. You hope and dream that your movie is successful and that it resonates with people. But I can't believe what it's doing. I mean, we made this movie for nothing. I just can't believe that it's getting the recognition that it's getting," he shared.

Within less than a month since its release, Obsession has now reportedly surpassed the Rs 75 crore milestone in the country, collecting over 10 times its modest budget of around Rs 7.5 crore (USD 1 million) in India alone. So far, the film has reportedly collected over Rs 78 crore, as reported by Sacnilk. Obsession has also become the highest-grossing Hollywood film in India. The film's success had also made it a sensation on social media with intense online debates, fan theories and memes.

In its opening week after its release on May 29, Obsession had earned Rs 18.55 crore. In the second week, it added Rs 31.25 crore more to its kitty, followed by an additional Rs 22 crore in the third week. Over its fourth weekend, Obsession earned another Rs 5.50 crore at the Indian box office.

Interestingly, Hollywood films are witnessing a glorious run at the Indian box office this year with back-to-back successes of Project Hail Mary, Lee Cronin's The Mummy, Obsession, The Devil Weds Prada 2, Michael, and others. To add to it, Spiderman: Brand New Day and The Odyssey have also recorded phenomenal advance bookings, indicating that 2026 has the potential to be the biggest year for Hollywood in India ever.
