What happens when the chaos of online dating enters the real world? Will Gluck's upcoming romantic comedy One Night Only attempts to answer that question by exploring how technology has transformed the way people meet, communicate and build relationships. The film is set to release in Indian cinemas on August 21, 2026.
Directed by Gluck, who has previously helmed romantic comedies like Anyone But You and Easy A, the film promises a contemporary take on love, set against the backdrop of a generation that is constantly connected through screens but often disconnected in real life.
One Night Only follows Owen, played by Callum Turner, who is dealing with the aftermath of a breakup, and Allie, portrayed by Monica Barbaro, a romantic at heart hoping to find something genuine. The two strangers meet during one unexpected night in a slightly fictionalised New York City, where a series of funny incidents and emotional detours bring them closer.
While the film revolves around a chance encounter, director Will Gluck says the idea came from observing the realities of dating in today's world. According to him, the story looks at how people behave while looking for love through apps, messages and digital conversations, and questions whether those same habits would continue when faced with real human interactions.
"It's a great jumping-off point for a love story. The film is an allegory for dating and love in our society right now," Gluck shared while discussing the inspiration behind the film.
The filmmaker added that one of the film's central ideas was exploring what would happen if the actions people usually perform on their phones, from swiping to texting, played out directly in front of them for several hours.
Unlike a typical futuristic romance, Gluck's film stays grounded in reality, using humour and emotion to reflect the challenges of forming meaningful relationships in the digital era.
The romantic comedy features Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner in the lead roles, with an ensemble cast that includes Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, Charlie Gillespie, Michelle Hurd, King Princess, Quintessa Swindell, Andrew Burnap, Mike Birbiglia, Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton.
With its mix of romance, comedy and commentary on changing relationship dynamics, One Night Only aims to explore whether authentic connections can still survive in a world of instant choices and fleeting conversations.
As audiences prepare for the August release, Will Gluck's latest film promises a heartfelt reminder that sometimes the most unexpected encounters can lead to the most memorable love stories.
